BUTUAN CITY, September 13 (PIA) - The Provincial Agrarian Reform Coordinating Committee (PARCCOM) of Agusan del Norte and the Federation of Agrarian Reform Communities Cooperative (FEDARCCO) have joined the continuing advocacy to protect and conserve Mount Mayapay, the city's natural heritage.

Officials of the Agusan del Norte PARCCOM during its meeting in September 13 pledged their strong support for the rehabilitation and conservation effort of Mt. Mayapay.

PARCCOM chairperson Greg Hontiveros bared that there was already a study on Mt. Mayapay which substantially proposed the need to rehabilitate and protect its ecological equilibrium.

Hontiveros believed that there should be significant advocacy support and action to save Mt. Mayapay since the surrounding communities especially the small farmers and agrarian reform cooperatives will be greatly affected once the mountain will seriously disturbed.

On the same occasion, the board of directors (BOD) of the FEDARCCO submitted their full support to save Mount Mayapay.

Meanwhile, Roselyn D. Saldua, Board of Director of FEDARCCO revealed that the cooperative has set a plan to conduct tree planting activities at Mt. Mayapay as part of their environmental support program.

"The FEDARCCO board of directors has been discussing a plan for tree planting activities to Mt. Mayapay. We will soon set schedule for the tree planting after we resolve some of the problems faced by the cooperative so we can focus with our agriculture and environmental programs," she said.

Saldua bared that the FEDARCCO is an alliance of agrarian reform farmer cooperatives and associations in Agusan del Norte with the total incorporators of 43 cooperatives and associations, as of September 2013. One of the missions of the cooperative is to "promote and develop the environment and the forests."(JSN/PIA-Caraga)
